There are basically two types of traveling:

1- There is traveling for photography in order to come back with a good share of photos

2- there is traveling for other needs like work or family trips where a photographer would use this chance to shoot as many pictures as he can get.

After deciding to travel some place, the first thing you should do is collecting geographical and historical information about it. Start by finding out what is special about this place, the manners and traditions of its people and what it is most famous for. Write it down in simple notes because the first questions you will have to answer after being back will be about these famous sites. You can’t visitGizafor instance without getting photos of the Pyramids. Even if these are typical sites that have been photographed thousands of times, you should start by shooting them then move to other probable sites.

When traveling, it is usually preferred that you don’t carry too much equipment because they will probably limit your movement and keep you from enjoying the beauty of the place. You should have one lens that would cover most of your needs: shooting nature, close by buildings and far away scenes like sunset or flying birds. An 18-200 or 18-250 mm lens would do. You may take a small tripod to hold the camera when shooting. Reflectors too (gold and silver) are very affective when shooting outside.

When it comes to digital shooting, take photos whenever you can. The more photos you take, the more likely you are to score some good shots. One important advice is to never delete unwanted shots before you come back home where the lights are better. Your screen might deceive you and creativity may just lie in one or another of those photos you hastily dump. Move your digital photos into your PC as soon as you can and make backup copies. You need to have a spare memory with you as well as a spare battery.

Don’t forget to take photos of yourself in the most outstanding places in your trip. A photographer normally belongs behind the camera which makes him forget to document himself with some of his pictures. After coming back, the only thing that isn’t included in those pictures is he.
